At the age of five, young general Jiang Huai lost his father, who died in battle, and his mother, who took her own life out of devotion to her husband. He subsequently enrolled at Jinglin Academy, where he unexpectedly met Lu Shunhua, the young daughter of the Prince Gongqian's household. Under the pretext of teaching her to play the flute, the two gradually grew close and fell in love.

In her youth, Lu Shunhua had everything a girl could wish for: a beloved, a confidante, close friends, and family. Yet a war that had been plotted long in advance destroyed everything she held dear.

For years, Jiang Huai had carried the burden of a blood feud. He vowed to crush his enemies and avenge his father. When war broke out, he took command of the army and set off for the battlefield, promising Lu Shunhua that he would return victorious and marry her.

What he did not know was that, after his departure, Lu Shunhua discovered she was pregnant.

With the war about to begin and already several months pregnant, Lu Shunhua journeyed to the front lines to tell Jiang Huai about their child. However, the enemy used a puppet stratagem to launch a counterattack, forcing her out of the city gates.

To protect the people inside the city, Jiang Huai ordered the gates shut, abandoning the attempt to rescue Lu Shunhua.

Eight years later, Jiang Huai had become a renowned, undefeated general, revered as a God of War. Believing Lu Shunhua to be dead, he even held a ghost marriage with her while he himself was still alive.

But Lu Shunhua had not died. Instead, she had been turned into a test subject for gu poison. Clinging to the convictions in her heart, she traveled thousands of miles to return to her homeland.

After a tumultuous entanglement with Jiang Huai, she finally let go of the obsession that had haunted her for years. She adopted a beggar child named Tutu as her own. Later, when the emperor had already grown suspicious of Jiang Huai, Jiang Huai severed the tendons in his own right hand in exchange for giving up his military achievements and accepting a marquis title.

In the end, he left with Lu Shunhua for Fengtiān City, where the two would begin a new life together.
