The White Crane Wades Through Water
Chao Lu traveled into a different world within a book. Her mission was to win the heart of the "white lotus" black-bellied villain male lead and fill in the gaps of the incomplete plot.
The male lead, Jiang Fuchu, was gentle, soft-spoken, and acted with the grace of a true gentleman in every matter.
But she knew this was only a facade. In reality, he was distant, cold, and eccentric—extremely difficult to handle.
Fortunately, Chao Lu was dedicated and managed to successfully win his heart through steady effort. Next, she only needed to push him to complete his "darkening" plotline, and her mission would be finished.
Yet, for some reason, Jiang Fuchu refused to turn dark. No matter what excessive things she did, he would "gently" forgive her.
After failing for the countless time, Chao Lu collapsed and re-evaluated the situation, only to discover she had identified the wrong target from the very beginning!
It turned out Jiang Fuchu really was a man of integrity! Meanwhile, her true target, Xiao Ji, had already turned as dark as the bottom of a pot, making the difficulty of winning him over "hell-level."
Chao Lu was mentally and physically exhausted: ...Can I restart? Upon receiving an affirmative answer, she impatiently and perfunctorily ended the messy relationship between the three of them, planning to escape through a faked death.
To her surprise, Jiang Fuchu, filled with utter despair, actually jumped off the cliff with her.
Chao Lu felt some guilt. To give him a reason to live, she made up a lie on the spot. "On the day the white crane comes through the water, I will return as well."
After her "death," Chao Lu somehow arrived two hundred years later. Upon opening her eyes, she heard that Jiang Fuchu—who had refused to turn dark back then—had finally done so. —He was triggered by her turning around to "fall in love" with someone else.
She tried to run away out of guilt but eventually fell into Jiang Fuchu’s hands.
Chao Lu watched as he approached with a sword, thinking he would run this love-scammer through. Instead, Jiang Fuchu gripped her hand and plunged the blade into his own chest.
In her daze, she heard his trembling voice. —Since you love monsters and madmen, now that I am like this, do you like me?

[Reading Guide]
Read with caution, may involve "blurb deception": atypical pursuit, atypical darkening, the male lead is a self-sacrificing "love-brain" (never killed the female lead), the second male lead and female lead have a romantic history (non-virgin male leads are not written);
Complex world-building and background story, an ancient mythological system mixed with original Daoist elements (short for: made-up), pseudo-time-travel, very melodramatic (referring to characters who don't seem to have mouths to talk things out), style varies, please be sure to read the warnings in Chapter 1;
It is definitely a Happy Ending!
