Lost Laughter / Shi Xiao
Lost Laughter, also known as Unable to Stop Oneself from Laughing.
Gu Yi is a stand-up comedian who works a day job and performs at night. She doesn’t have grand ambitions; her goal is simply to make everyone in the audience laugh. One day, a man in the front row shows up who never laughs, no matter what jokes she tells or how she interacts with the crowd. Offstage, he’s just as “unromantic,” leaving her feeling exceptionally frustrated.
To try and make himself laugh, Liang Daiwen has been trying all sorts of things: writing a diary, reading novels, watching girl group performances, and even randomly going to a stand-up comedy show. However, he has alexithymia, a condition that makes it hard for him to feel normal emotions like joy or sorrow. No matter what happens, he remains “completely unfazed.”
Guan Xingxin, 28, who received a cornea donation and can now see, still hasn’t adjusted to the vibrant world. Along with sight, she has also been confronted with the less-than-beautiful side of human nature. In her opinion, it’s not a bad thing that Liang Daiwen’s “emotional blindness” can’t be cured.
Modern city dwellers are finding that it takes all their strength just to make themselves laugh out loud.
